Little unity in Albany on ending corruption

Jimmy Vielkind writes in the Times Union state lawmakers remain far from consensus around a legislative response to recent corruption arrests. While Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo released Tues., Apr. 30, his second bill proposal in 24 hours designed to combat political corruption, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman held a news conference where criticisms and competing proposals swirled. Cuomo has suggested a repeal of the Wilson-Pakula Act, which forbids candidates from receiving the nomination of a political party they are not a registered member of, along with the creation of an election investigations czar to be appointed by the governor's office. Schneiderman has asked for a referral from Cuomo to allow the Attorney General's office to have concurrent jurisdiction to investigate violations of election law violations. Silver has touted a bill that would create a board to serve as an election czar, which he said was more independent than the Cuomo proposal. Read the full story in the Times Union.
