Health board ready to take up hog farm findings
Anthony Fiducia is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a meeting of the Cairo Town Health Board will be held December 11 to decide the fate of Jason Watts' hog farm. Fiducia is calling it the town board member-elect's "moment of truth." At issue is Watt's decision to place pigpens on land he rents on Mountain Avenue, and the resulting accusation by neighbors that there were health risks posed by noxious odors and potential water contamination from the animals. At the meeting next week, the town health board will decide if it will adopt and incorporate a letter issued by the state Department of Agriculture about the farm. “The point we’re at now is deciding whether or not to accept the findings of the state agricultural letter,” Town Supervisor Daniel Benoit said. “We have to look at the Sound Practice Letter and determine for ourselves whether or not we believe the question of a potential public health hazard was adequately investigated.” The letter, signed by Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball, concluded the farm does not pose a hazard to health or the environment. The Cairo Town Health Board will meet 7 p.m., Mon., Dec. 11 at Cairo Town Hall, 512 Main Street.
