Stockport coffers $250K short
Oct 24, 2012 6:45 am
Nathan Mayberg reports in the Register Star a private accounting firm has uncovered a discrepancy of $250,000, or more in the Town of Stockport's books. The discovery was revealed to residents at a public meeting, Tues., Oct. 23. The audit is ongoing, and the Office of the State Comptroller has been called upon to initiate an investigation. A town official said it is possible the funds are not missing. There is a chance the town overspent over a period of many years instead. The audit began in July, and the town's long-time bookkeeper left shortly thereafter, Mayberg reports. As a result of the shortfall, the town is considering a funding cut to the police department, a job cut in the sewer department and increasing water rates and taxes in 2013.
