Coeymans board in support of underground power line

Nov 03, 2020 3:00 pm
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media the Coeymans Town Board has agreed to support an underground power line originating at the Canadian border that will run under Old Ravena Road on its way to New York City. The board unanimously supported a resolution at its October 22 public meeting, voicing support for the Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line proposed by Transmission Developers Inc. The privately funded, $3 billion infrastructure project will be one of the largest of its kind in New York state history. A spokesman for Transmission Developers said the 333-mile underwater and underground electric transmission line will import 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy from Canada and transmit it to the city of New York. Approximately three-and-a-half miles of the line are located within the town; there are an additional 2.2 miles in the village of Ravena. The transmission line will be constructed entirely within the CSX Railroad right-of-way. The project route would take the power lines through numerous local municipalities including Coeymans, Ravena, New Baltimore, Coxsackie, Bethlehem, Voorheesville, Athens, Catskill and more. If approved, the project will begin in late 2020 with construction expected to continue through 2025. The company plans to seek a 30-year PILOT, or Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement, a tax incentive. Read the full story in The Ravena News-Herald.
