Joseph Spector reports at the Poughkeepsie Journal that the Public Service Commission finalized a settlement with Charter Spectrum July 11, allowing the cable and broadband company to continue working in New York. The state Public Service Commission voted 3-1 for the deal in April, which was approved July 11. "With the 2019 settlement agreement and today’s order, from my perspective, the public interests of New Yorkers are in a materially better place today than where things stood a year ago," Public Service Commission acting general counsel John Sipos told commission members. Last year New York threatened to kick Charter out of New York if it didn't improve its broadband services, particularly in rural and underprivileged parts of the state as promised. Now, the company has more promises: including doubling its investment in upstate New York, which in 2016 was estimated at $305 million. That projects broadband services to an additional 145,000 residences and businesses in upstate New York by Sept. 30, 2021, and then Charter will spend $12 million more for an additional 45,000 upstate addresses.
