Catskill village parking kerfuffle results in suspended fines

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media for those who received parking tickets in the village of Catskill July 9, the fines will be forgiven. Residents contested the citations after one of the village's municipal lots was closed. The village Department of Public Works announced July 6 the lot would be closed from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday to allow crews to paint new lines and to remove trash and brush. But with the resulting shortage of off-street parking that day, motorists took spots on Main Street, which has metered parking, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a two-hour parking limit. The dearth of signage explaining all of this to drivers complicated matters further. In response, the village has ordered labels for the meters, Village President Vincent Seeley said. And, Seeley said, the 20 or so tickets that were given out for exceeding the two-hour parking limit on Tuesday will be forgiven. Village Department of Public Works Superintendent Michael McGrath pointed out that other off-street parking options were available. “People could have parked in the lot over by the dance institute but no wants to hear that,” he said.
