Ivan Lajara reports in the Daily Freeman that Rough Draft Bar & Books in Kingston apologized and took down a sign Jan. 14 that that read “Writers from S##thole Countries.” The book display with authors from Africa, which President Donald Trump recently disparaged, was left up, with the sign changed to read, “E Pluribus Unum," or "out of many, one." The original display went viral nationally, with co-owner Anthony Stromoski quoted in Business Insider Jan. 12, “I think that the positive statement of our collection of books stands on its own.” But on Jan. 15, owners Amanda and Anthony Stromoski wrote a statement that read, “While we received plenty of positive feedback on our own page, we also received some comments and phone calls from people — including immigrants and people of color — who were offended by our own use of the president’s alleged language. They understood the irony of our post and our good intentions, but were still hurt by the repetition of those words — and we understand that better now.” Rough Draft Bar & Books opened in November. Books by Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, Marlon James, Junot Diaz, Khaled Hosseini, Trevor Noah, and Roxane Gay are included in the display. Gay criticized the display on social media. The store is now donating all proceeds from books on the table and 10 percent of weekend sales to the International Rescue Committee.
