Landslide closes section of Route 42

May 16, 2014 6:45 am
Michael Ryan is reporting in The Daily Mail a landslide has closed Route 42 indefinitely between the towns of Lexington and Shandaken in Greene and Ulster counties. New York State Department of Transportation crews were called to the scene Thurs., May 15, when a 50-foot section of the mountainside collapsed. Heavy rains are expected over the next few days, which could prolong the closure. The official detour established by the DOT sends motorists to Route 28 via routes 23A and 214. Engineers are assessing the situation. They are also examining erosion at Beech Ridge Road North, three miles east of the slide. A hole is widening at the base of that road where it meets Route 42, alongside the West Kill. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
