Nearby residents protest proposed concrete plant in Kingston

Patricia R. Doxsey reports at the Daily Freeman that dozens of Ulster County residents turned out July 16 to tell members of the county legislature they are against plans for a concrete and steel fabrication facility in the town of Kingston. "The scope of this project and its impact negatively affects many aspects of Ulster County life. Therefore we feel it is the responsibility of the full Ulster County Legislature to become involved," said Mel Sedonick. Many residents did not want a concrete plant next to Onteora Lake. Several speakers decried the town Planning Board's ruling that the project would not have a negative impact on the environment. Kevin Smith, chairman of the board of the Woodstock Land Conservancy, said that 850 Route 28 LLC, the company behind the project, failed to state in its application that the project would be adjacent to the state-owned forest land. But the speakers were largely spinning their wheels, as Legislature Chairperson Tracey Bartels said the county legislature has no authority over the project.
