Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation's annual health outcome report has ranked Greene County 47th of 62 New York counties. In the same report, Columbia County was ranked 20th statewide. The ranking measured outcomes based on certain health criteria, including the lifespan, quality of life, and the percentage of low birth weight babies born in the county. Greene County's new ranking is an improvement over two years ago, Greene County Legislator Aidan O’Connor Jr., Democrat of Durham, said. In 2016, he said the county was ranked 59th out of 62 New York counties. He called the new ranking "...a tremendous feat in such a short amount of time.” According to the report, 24 percent of Greene County adults are obese, 18 percent smoke and 20 percent drink to excess. In Columbia County, 18 percent of adults smoke, 24 percent of adults are obese and 20 percent drink to excess. In Columbia County the ratio of population to primary care physicians is 1,980-to-one, according to the report; the ratio is 2,650-to-one in Greene County. Columbia Memorial has been implementing a strategy to help improve the health of the local population, hospital spokesman William Van Slyke said. Columbia Memorial has developed local care centers throughout the Twin Counties, especially in remote areas in the Catskill Mountains such as Windham and remote locations in Columbia County such as Copake, he said.
