Website disappears, so do donations

Aug 06, 2019 1:30 pm
Lauren Wingenroth is reporting for Dance magazine the NYCharities website has disappeared, along with thousands in charitable donations made through the portal to support small non-profit organizations statewide. Yvan Greenberg, executive director of Stephen Petronio Company, says they are owed about $6,000 by the organization. NYCharities [dot] org was a free clearinghouse for companies to accept credit and debit card donations online. It also allowed companies to sell tickets to galas and events, and set up recurring donations. In mid-June, the organization failed to transfer the contributions from the past month to its users' bank accounts, and shortly thereafter the website went down. Users' subsequent attempts to reach NYCharities were largely futile. As a result, New York Attorney General Letitia James' office July 31, launched an investigation into the non-profit, as thousands of dollars from hundreds of organizations remained missing, including arts organizations, schools, churches and Parent Teacher Associations. Greenberg said it was always challenging to get in touch with someone from the organization, and since last fall the deposits Petronio received from NYCharities did not match up with donation reports. The Petronio company, based in Manhattan, with a residency center in Roundtop, has filed a complaint with the AG's office for the funds it is owed. According to media reports, NYCharities had not filed a 990 tax form in three years, and its 501c3 nonprofit status was revoked earlier this year. The whereabouts of Cristine Chronin, founder and president of NYCharities, are currently unknown. Read the full story at dance magazine [dot] com.
