Prison staff getting vaccines at lower rate then public

Apr 23, 2021 5:55 am

The Prison Policy Initiative reports that only 39 percent of prison staff in New York have been vaccinated for COVID-19. That rate is lower than the national average of 48 percent among prison staff. That rate is also lower than most local county averages for vaccinations among all adults. Staff in prison, working at a congregate facility, were eligible earlier for vaccines doses than most of the general public, so the numbers should be higher. The Marshall Project reported in mid-March that, “In Massachusetts, more than half the people employed by the Department of Correction declined to be immunized." The Prison Policy Initiative, an activist group, uses the data to make a case for vaccinating all inmates as soon as possible. In New York in late March Justice Alison Y. Tuitt of State Supreme Court in the Bronx ruled that people in prisons and jails had been arbitrarily left out of New York's vaccine rollout and that doing so was “unfair and unjust” and an “abuse of discretion,” The New York Times reported.
