Coxsackie owl project moving forward

Jan 13, 2017 7:20 am

Melanie Lekocevic is reporting in The Daily Mail on the progress made on Coxsackie's first public art project, similar to the cats in Catskill and the bears in Cairo. Residents chose the owl, the symbol of Coxsackie, as the subject of the fiberglass sculptures. The Hoot of the Owl Committee has lined up 51 local businesses and individuals as sponsors to underwrite the material costs, and 99 sketches have been submitted. The ideas presented are varied, with designs ranging from nature scenes to ancient history, from "Athena" to "Owl Capone." Fourteen have already been prearranged between artist and sponsor, and sponsors will be able to choose from the remaining 85 ideas at a selection reception later this month. "The first year corresponds nicely with the 150th anniversary of the village of Coxsackie, and I expect that the owls will bring many visitors to our community from both near and far. It will be an exciting year," Mayor Mark Evans said. The owls will be installed at outdoor locations throughout the village in time for the annual Memorial Day parade.
