County fairs will be happening throughout the summer across New York, and a Delaware County group is trying to keep track of which fairs have rules about selling racist merchandise, such as Confederate flags. Fair for All has sent a survey to county fairs across the state and found that, locally, the Columbia County Fair is the only fair with a policy blocking sales of racist items. The Delaware County Fair allows the sale of racist items, and racist items have been seen for sale at the Greene County Youth Fair and Ulster County Fair, which have no policy blocking sales of racist items. Most local fairs did not respond to the group, so their policies are unknown. In this group are the Altamont Fair in Albany County, the Dutchess County Fair, the Schaghticoke Fair in Rensselaer County, and the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair. In 2015 photos of Confederate flag memorabilia for sale from vendors at the Columbia County Fair were shared online. “For some time it has been our policy to discourage the sale and display of Confederate flags and other objectionable materials at the Columbia County Fair,” said Nelson Alford, a lawyer, who is the fair’s president of the board. “The policy's in place; it has worked very well and will continue.” The New York State Fair banned the sale of Confederate flags in 2015.
