Statewide 'Drive Sober' campaign begins Wednesday

Mariann Cabness is reporting for News 10 Albany the New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies statewide will increase enforcement of impaired driving beginning Wed., Aug. 19, as part of the STOP-DWI Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. The operation lasts through September 7. Signs will alert drivers to the consequences of impaired driving during the campaign. During the 2019 enforcement campaign, law enforcement issued 5,000 tickets statewide for impaired driving and more than 170,000 tickets for other vehicle and traffic law violations. “There is no excuse for driving impaired — it’s reckless and puts not only yourself but everyone else on the road in danger,” Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said. "...If you drink and drive, you will be caught and you will be held accountable.” Fatal crashes involving an impaired driver have decreased more than 19 percent from 2010 to 2019, according to data from the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research at the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College.
