Matt Coyne is reporting in the Poughkeepsie Journal New Yorkers traveling over the Memorial Day weekend could see their time spent in extreme gridlock, the worst delays nationwide. According to the American Automobile Association, the worst time to travel will generally be May 24 and the afternoon of May 25, but, 25th, between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., will be the worst. “Our advice to drivers is to avoid peak commute times in major cities altogether — traveling late morning or early afternoon — or plan alternative routes,” said a spokesman for AAA. The association projects that 41.5 million people will travel this weekend, a 13-year high and nearly 5 percent more than last year. The vast majority — 36.6 million — will travel by car. Travel times could nearly triple for those traveling around and through the New York area. In addition to traffic, travelers will have to pay more for gas, as well.
