Columbia County has coronavirus problems

Dec 16, 2020 6:33 am
Columbia County has some coronavirus problems. More than 100 people went to a series of private gatherings earlier this month in the county, including a wake and a funeral, and now that folks from the group have tested positive for COVID-19, most members of the group won't tell health officials anything. Columbia County Health Director Jack Mabb said the Dec. 6 wake and funeral, and a subsequent bonfire Dec. 9 are possible "superspreader" events. The woman who hosted the funeral has refused to tell contact tracers about the event. But even without the information, the events are causing ripples in the community. One faculty member and several parents of children who attend Hawthorne Valley School attended the funeral events and now the school has stopped in-person instruction. Another problem in Columbia County is with testing a vaccination site. On Dec. 15 the Columbia County Department of Health used the A. B. Shaw firehouse in Claverack for COVID-19 testing. They were testing the facility too, to use as a vaccine inoculation center with its large vehicle bay, heated flooring, and large space. But health officials discovered there is not enough parking at the firehouse. Meanwhile, Gracie’s in Catskill reported an employee who was last there Dec. 5 has COVID-19. The restaurant is temporarily closed for cleaning, contact tracing, and testing. Greene County announced 10 new coronavirus cases Dec. 15, and Columbia County reported 15 new cases.
