Eric Anderson is reporting for the Times Union the conversion of the former James A. Farley Post Office building in Manhattan into the Moynihan Train Hall will be finished this week and Amtrak has announced it will open January 1. The Moynihan Train Hall honors the late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who for decades pushed for a replacement to the Penn Station building, the demolition of which is now considered a colossal mistake. Like the original Penn Station, the Farley building was designed by architects McKim, Mead & White, and built in the Beaux-Art style popular at the beginning of the 20th century. Penn Station is Amtrak's busiest and Albany its ninth busiest, making the Empire Corridor's Hudson Valley section one of the most heavily traveled on the national rail system. The new hall will accommodate waiting passengers under a "sky lit atrium" intended to provide daylight, according to Amtrak. The conversion includes a newly designed Metropolitan Lounge to accommodate first-class passengers. Wifi will be available throughout the station. The expansion will make train-waiting more pleasant, but it will not expand the number of tracks serving the station. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced plans to expand track capacity by 40 percent, although completion of that project is still some time in the future. Meanwhile, the Moynihan project also includes 740,000 square feet of office space, almost all of it leased by Facebook. The U.S, Postal Service will continue to operate in the building, as well.
