Steve Hughes is reporting for the Times Union Albany County Executive Dan McCoy said April 14, he does not believe schools will reopen this school year. He made the remarks as he announced the deaths of two more people from the coronavirus in Albany County in 24 hours. McCoy said the spread of the virus looks to be hitting its local peak of infection, but he predicted there would not be enough time for cases to drop to the point that it would be safe to reopen schools. Students around the region and state have been distance learning from home since early March. McCoy said he believes local businesses will not be open completely until July or August. As of Tuesday, there were 499 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the county, McCoy said. County Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen says increased testing is allowing analysts to see the asymptomatic spread of the virus locally. That led to the recommendation that people wear masks in public. She said she hopes the county will release a platform demographics about who has been tested in the coming days.
