Supervisors vote to continue real estate transfer, mortgage taxes

Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Columbia County Board of Supervisors on Wed., Aug. 9, authorized the continued imposition of an additional real estate transfer tax and mortgage tax for two more years countywide. Greenport Town Supervisor Edward Nabozny cast the lone dissenting vote. “We should be lessening the tax burden. I think this is an area we could do that,” he said. County Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell said the real estate transfer tax and mortgage tax account for $8.5 million in county revenue. Without that revenue, he said, the county would have to cut expenses or raise other taxes. Also Wednesday, the board agreed to close on the purchase of the 9.7-acre property at 50 Grandinetti Drive in the Gerald R. Simons Commerce Park for $840,000.
