Soares leads by 2,700 votes in Dem primary

Jul 07, 2020 2:45 pm
Robert Gavin is reporting for the Times Union with a lead of 2,700 votes, Albany County District Attorney David Soares is expected to win the Democratic primary over challenger Matthew Toporowski. “For all intents and purposes, it is over,” said James Long, the elections attorney for Soares, late July 6, at the county Board of Elections. At that point, Soares was leading Toporowski 14,710 to 12,007. Soares, 50, of Glenmont, is a four-term incumbent; Toporowski, 34, of Albany, is an attorney in private practice and a former prosecutor for Soares. Long said the absentee ballot count has mirrored the primary night machine voting, the exception being a one election district in Cohoes. Toporowski's base was believed to be strongest in the city of Albany, where the progressive Democrat was backed by Mayor Kathy Sheehan. “As far as I’m concerned, this is over. I’m here because I want to dot my I's and cross my T’s but I don’t see how anybody could overcome this lead,” Long said. Although he expects his client to win, Long stopped short of declaring victory. But Toporowski remained positive Monday. He said, “At this point we want to see how the suburban numbers begin to come in before we make any decision. We owe it to our supporters out there to do so!” The official results were expected to be known later in the week. Soares is also running on the Independence Party line in the general election, and Toporowski will appear on the Working Families line. Read the full story in the Times Union.
