Emilia Teasdale is reporting in The Columbia Paper budget season is underway and the Chatham Town Board held a special meeting October 4, to begin developing its 2019 budget. Several department heads have requested raises for the coming year, in amounts ranging from 3 to 10 percent. Following presentations from two fire companies funded by town, the board then reviewed various department spending plans, beginning with the assessor, who has requested a 10 percent increase in his salary. The code enforcement office presented a budget that includes the possibility that its workload will increase as a result of short-term rental regulations. Highway Superintendent Joe Rickert started his review of the Highway Department budget by announcing his retirement in 2020. He then requested a 5 percent increase in his salary, saying he wants to make what other highway superintendents in the county are making. He also talked about salary increases negotiated with the unionized town employees, and the increasing cost of oil. Recreation Director Mike West presented a budget for maintaining Crellin Park and a budget for the summer recreation program. He detailed work needed around the park and the tennis courts. West also requested a cell phone, the possible installation of WiFi at the park and a 10 percent increase in his hourly rate. Town Clerk Beth Anne Rippel then requested a 3 percent increase in her salary and for the deputy clerks. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
