Albany County airs tourism ad during Super Bowl

Feb 04, 2020 12:21 am
Lauren Stanforth reports for the Times Union that Albany County spent $30,000 of taxpayer money on a Super Bowl ad that aired Feb. 2. The 30-second ad, trying to lure tourists to Albany County, did not air nationally, but just on the Fox23 affiliate in Albany. The county has spent $130,000 in total for airtime for the ad in the Capital Region since last summer. The Albany County Capital Resource Corporation pays for the ads, fronting the money it earns from bond issuing fees. Albany County will spend $250,000 for advertising in 2020. The ad featured featured Park Playhouse, Thacher State Park, and the USS Slater, and a change from a previous version of the ad: video of the now-defunct Albany Empire arena football team was removed, and a person of color was added, after complaints that the earlier version only showed white people. "It’s going to put Albany County in primetime," said Albany County legislator Gary Domalewicz. Read more about this story in the Times Union.
