Albany County sheriff denies solitary confinement allegations

Jan 02, 2019 12:35 am
Spectrum News reports that while a federal lawsusit filed days ago alleges inmates from New York City are being sent to Albany County for solitary confinement, Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple says, "There is no solitary confinement at Albany County Jail.” In 2015 New York City banned solitary confinement for inmates under the age of 22. On Dec. 31, a representative of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said, "For an extremely small number of young detainees facing credible safety threats in our jails, the safest option is a transfer to another facility. This mayor ended solitary confinement for young adults and for the sake of the thousands of them in solitary confinement from the rest of the state he believes those jails and prisons should, too.” Spectrum News has requested information from the Department of Corrections about the kind of treatment Rikers transfers are expected to face at the Albany County Jail, but the request has not been answered. The federal lawsuit also claims Albany County jail staffers beat the young inmates and forcibly conducted rectal searches. Albany County has received about $8.1 million this year for boarders from other facilities, much of it from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Read the full story at Spectrum News.
