Hosted by Kieran Riley (Monday); Pastor Kim Singletary (1st, 3rd Tuesday); Randall Martin (2nd, 4th Tuesday); a rotating collection of hosts (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday); Tom DePietro and Selha Graham (Thursday); Azouke Legba and Carline Murphy (Sunday).

Today at 4 p.m., Kieran Riley is joined by curator Katherine C. M. Adams to discuss the October 25th premiere of the EMPAC-commissioned new stage performance Permanent Trespass (Beirut of the Balkans & the American Century).

Touching on parallel histories—including the breakdown of the former Yugoslavia and ongoing crises in and around Lebanon—filmmaker Bassem Saad & writer Sanja Grozdanić begin their jointly authored stage performance as eulogists reflecting on “professional mourning.” Eventually, Permanent Trespass unravels into a very different sort of historical reckoning. The characters must contend with the sense of an ending–of an epoch, of a revolution, of a regime. Previously presented in Dro (Italy), The Hague, Beirut, and Frankfurt, this production is commissioned by EMPAC and NW Aalst (Belgium) to integrate a new sound score, film material, and additional experimental projection. The artists approach this expanded version of Permanent Trespass as a cinepoem, building on avant-garde techniques for merging the sensibility of poetic writing with the possibilities of cinematic footage.

At 5 p.m., Kieran will be joined by Sal Cataldi to talk about his collaborations with filmmaker Charles Dennis, which will be featured at an upcoming retrospective at Upstate Films’ Orpheum Theater on October 23rd.

Choreographer and filmmaker Charles Dennis, a co-founder of P.S. 122 in New York City, has been creating works of dance, performance art and film since 1977. With the advent of affordable camcorders in the mid-1980s, Charles began experimenting with video in live performances and making short films. Now thirteen of these short films and one live movement/music performance will be presented in a retrospective of this work at Upstate Films’ Orpheum Theater in Saugerties, N.Y., on October 23 at 5 pm. The lineup will include the premiere of his latest film, Drone Girl: Destination Zena. Drone Girl is a duet for African American dancer/performer Stacey Smith and a flying drone aircraft. The film was conceived as a tender expression of the relationship between a human and a drone. The film features a score by Dennis’ frequent collaborator Sal Cataldi and his Spaghetti Eastern Music Trio, with bassist Jeff Keithline and percussionist Mark Peritz. The score was released as an EP in September 2024, which can be heard here.
