Clegg has lead over Kavanagh for Ulster County DA

Nov 26, 2019 12:49 am
Patricia R. Doxsey reports in the Daily Freeman that with, at most, 500 votes left to count, Democrat David Clegg has a 118-vote lead over Republican Michael J. Kavanagh for Ulster County District Attorney. There are 300 absentee and affidavit ballots to be counted and about 200 more votes with a fate yet to be decided by a judge. Most of the ballots to be counted are from Shawangunk, Gardiner, Marlborough, and Plattekill, with Shawangunk and Gardiner likely sources of many Republican votes, and more split outcomes likely in Marlborough and Plattekill. After the last of the absentee and affidavit votes are counted a winner will be announced if the margin between the two candidates is greater than the number of challenged ballots before the judge. If the outcome could be affected by the challenged ballots, then a state Supreme Court justice will determine whether any of them can be counted. In a contest that has been almost exactly 50-50 so far, Kavanagh would need to get about 62 percent of 500 remaining votes to make up a 118-vote deficit.
