Group ranks the Hudson as one of the most endangered U.S. rivers

Mid-Hudson News Network is reporting the environmental group American Rivers has named the Hudson River the second most-endangered river in the United States. The river was ranked second on the list of 10 imperiled waterways. The report cites what American Rivers calls “the grave threat that potential construction of storm surge barriers could pose to this rich tidal estuary," and faults the plans being considered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, calling them “far too limited.” Among the plans are “walls [that] could act like partial dams, blocking fish and wildlife, including Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon, American shad, American eel …,” according to the report. The environmental group ranked the Gila River in New Mexico as the country's most endangered waterway, and the Upper Mississippi River was named third. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
