Independent candidate to run against Maloney in 2020

Chris McKenna is reporting at The Fray Scott Smith, a former Middletown alderman, has registered as an independent candidate in the 2020 18th Congressional District race. Smith joins Republican Chele Chiavacci Farley in the effort to unseat incumbent Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney. Smith, a middle-school science teacher from Goshen, ran for Congress as an independent in 2014, garnering 4,000 votes in a close race between Maloney and GOP candidate Nan Hayworth. Smith declared his intention to run in March, describing himself as a "foundationalist" who embraces the country's founding principles.
