Smith joins Republican Chele Chiavacci Farley in the effort to unseat incumbent Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney. Smith, a middle-school science teacher from Goshen, ran for Congress as an independent in 2014, garnering 4,000 votes in a close race between Maloney and GOP candidate Nan Hayworth. Smith declared his intention to run in March, describing himself as a "foundationalist" who embraces the country's founding principles.
