Montana oil train accident spills 35,000 gallons

Al Jazeera America reports that a July 17 oil train accident spilled 35,000 gallons of crude oil in Montana, the latest in a series of North American oil train accidents. North Dakota crude oil is being shipped all over the country, including through Greene, Ulster, and Albany counties locally, in record numbers, and there have been several accidents. In New York, environmental activists have called for a ban on the train, or at least improved safety regulations. Recently, U.S. transportation officials extended orders for railroads to notify states about hazardous crude oil shipments, and required sturdier construction of tank cars containing dangerous liquids.
