Cuomo says he will lead citizen armada to stop off-shore drilling

May 07, 2018 5:45 am

Danielle Muoio is reporting for Politico New York that what began May 4, as a routine press conference denouncing the Trump administration's plan to open the mid-Atlantic coast to offshore drilling, quickly turned into Gov. Andrew Cuomo declaring he would lead an armada of private boats to "interfere" with any attempts to drill or test for fossil fuels. “I’m going to commission the citizen fleet from throughout the state to go out and interfere with their federal effort just as Winston Churchill did in Dunkirk,” Cuomo said. “If you think I’m kidding, I’m not, and I’m going to lead that citizen fleet.” Cuomo's top aide, Melissa DeRosa, backed up Cuomo's promise on Twitter, saying he was, in fact, “not kidding.” Cuomo also said he is pushing legislation that would prohibit the production of oil and gas in state waters. The state will also launch a website to collect citizen testimony in opposition to the drilling proposal to send to the federal government. Called the "State of Our Water" bill, the legislation would also prohibit companies from building infrastructure, such as pipelines, in state waters. If passed by both houses and signed into law, the legislation would also block entities from transporting crude oil in federal waters off the coast of New York.
