Peebles in Greenport to close

Bill Williams is reporting for WCTW-FM the rumors are true — the Peebles department store in Greenport is closing. Banners were hung at the store in the Fairview Plaza August 10, announcing the closure and the start of a storewide sale. Peebles' parent company, Stage Stores, is expected to replace the exiting business with a Gordmans store. Gordmans is a chain of Midwestern off-price department stores founded in Omaha, Nebraska. It operates at 141 locations in 22 states nationwide. Stage Stores traces its beginnings to the 1920s, with the founding of Palais Royal and Bealls, both family owned businesses. In 2019, Stage announced its long-term strategy to convert its department stores to Gordmans, with a goal of reaching 300 total stores by mid-2020.
