Athens village searching for new DPW location

Daniel Zuckerman is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the village of Athens is in the market for a new Department of Public Works headquarters. The department's current location, at 93 N. Washington Street, is beyond renovation and has no room to expand. The village board is considering the purchase of an 8,000-square-foot building on North Washington Street, built by Peckham Industries in 2003, and close to the Athens State Boat Launch. Mayor Peter Alberti has not disclosed the asking price for the parcel, saying only that it is significantly higher than the $720,000 appraised value. “We’re throwing our offer of what the appraisal was and see where it goes from there,” Alberti said. If the offer is not accepted, the board will look into sharing space with the town of Athens Highway Department on Old Kings Road, or constructing a new building on village-owned land behind the volunteer fire department on Third Street. Construction of a new building would cost approximately $1.5 million, Alberti said. The mayor has formed a committee to review the various options available to the village.
