Jan 14, 2010 9:17 pm
From Elizabeth Benjamin in The Daily Politics:
Republican Bruce Blakeman, who has been mulling a potential challenge to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand since last fall, confirmed that he will indeed formally announce his candidacy this Sunday.... "I will confirm that I'm announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate seat. I am doing so at my boyhood home of Valley Stream, and it will be an announcement and a rally. I will make a speech outlining what I feel are the important issues facing the state and the country as well as explaining why I'm running."

Blakeman is an attorney and Port Authority commissioner who was as a member of the Nassau County Legislature in the 1990s. (He held the titles of presiding officer and speaker while he was there). He ran for state comptroller in 1998, but was defeated by Democrat H. Carl McCall.
