The Greene Land Trust, Hudsonia, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Columbia-Greene Counties have received a two-year grant from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund to map Greene County's natural resources. Hudsonia, at Bard College, will create a countywide natural resources inventory, compiling information on forests, streams, wetlands, scenic vistas, and other natural features into a series of interactive, web-based maps. The Greene Land Trust already has basic versions of these maps at its website. Cornell Cooperative Extension will then create “story maps” that are more user-friendly. The Greene IDA will fund workshops on how to use the maps. Bob Knighton, President of the Greene Land Trust, said, “Greene County is rich in natural resources; in fact, it is those resources that draw visitors to this area, and tourism is the base of much of the county’s economy. Yet few towns and villages have detailed data that they can use to know, for example, which land parcels absorb excessive rainwater that helps prevent flooding, or which forest tracts provide essential navigation corridors for particular species. Through this project it is our goal to make such information available – and useful – to town boards and planning boards, as well conservation organizations.”
