May 18, 2020 2:00 pm
Amanda Fries is reporting for the Times Union a new audit released by the state Comptroller's office has found that while most controlled substance providers meet the requirements for proper disposal of the drugs, the method used to dispose of the substances is not always environmentally friendly. Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office recently found more than 50 percent of controlled substances from 20 providers were flushed down the drain during a 40-month period from Jan. 1, 2016, through April 27, 2019. It also found some providers were failing to follow their own policies or were not familiar with them. The audit was conducted of the Office of Addiction Services and Supports programs. The comptroller called on the office to ensure certified treatment providers are disposing of the drugs in a “safe, environmentally sound way” to keep unwanted drugs from polluting soil and water.
