School officials warn of telephone scam

Richard Moody is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Catskill school district and local law enforcement officials are warning residents about a telephone scam in which an anonymous caller solicits donations for the school's athletics program. Officials recently posted an advisory on the district website warning of the scam. Similar warnings have been posted on the Cairo-Durham, Hudson and New Lebanon districts' websites. The Catskill district received three complaints from people who were contacted by anonymous callers asking for donations to the district’s athletic teams, Catskill Central School District Superintendent Ronel Cook said. “Citizens are calling us and complaining,” Cook said. “We do not ask for donations.” Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley warned residents to be wary of any calls from anonymous individuals asking for donations. “Either hang up the phone or get as much information as you can,” Seeley said. “Then contact us.” Seeley said the scams have been ongoing for months.
