Flanagan on education: 'Fasten your seat belts'

Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential New York Senate Education Committee Chair John Flanagan said in an interview earlier this week he expects fiery debates over education to rage in 2015. “I mentioned to somebody the other day,...it’s like 'happy holidays,' and fasten your seat belts ladies and gentlemen,” he said on WCNY’s “The Capitol Pressroom.” Flanagan spoke of the letter sent last week to outgoing Education Commissioner John King and Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch by Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration. The letter posed questions that indicate Cuomo’s desire to push teacher reforms through the Legislature and a desire to reform the selection process for the Board of Regents next year. As for what the Senate Republican Conference will want in terms of education policy in 2015, Flanagan pointed out the conference has new members who will bring new opinions to the table.
