New York politicians react as Kavanaugh nomination speeds through Senate

Sep 28, 2018 1:45 pm
The U.S. Senate's Judiciary Committee voted the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the floor of the U.S. Senate, where it is expected to pass. Arizona Senator Jeff Flake is currently holding up a full vote to demand an FBI investigation against new charges against Kavanaugh. The vote came hours after Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified about a sexual attack she experienced at the hands of Kavanaugh, with a third person in the room and other witnesses and accusers not called to testify. New York politicians responded to the news. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand tweeted, "Any senator who votes to confirm Judge Kavanaugh after Dr. Ford’s testimony is telling our country exactly this: the experiences of women don’t matter. Their trauma doesn’t matter. Their stories and their voices don’t matter." Sen Chuck Schumer tweeted, "If our Republican colleagues are so certain of Judge Kavanaugh’s story, they should immediately demand that the White House order the FBI to reopen the background investigation, and hold off on a vote for several days so all the facts can come out." And Gov. Andrew Cuomo put out a statement saying, in part, "President Trump, you said you would watch the hearings today. I believe Dr. Ford's testimony is very compelling. Only a political skeptic could find a reason to disbelieve her. What is her possible motive to lie? In any event, I fear this will just increase the political polarization. Whatever happens, your decision will be tainted for history and with it the credibility of the Supreme Court."
