Three children, two adults die in East Durham fire
Steve Hughes and Robert Gavin are reporting in the Times Union three children and two adults perished April 2 in a house fire on Route 145 in East Durham, according to a family member. The blaze at 2753 Route 145 killed Nicholas Mammano; his wife, Mary; and three of their grandchildren, all under the age of 12. The children's father, John Mammano, was reportedly in critical condition at the Clark Burn Center in Syracuse. Mary Mammano was a nurse for Alzheimer's patients for more than 40 years, and Nicholas was a retired from the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The family had gathered at the home the night before to celebrate Easter. State Trooper Steven Nevel, a spokesman for State Police Troop F, said the investigation is ongoing. The fire was extinguished by 12:30 p.m. "We don't have a cause yet," Nevel said. Read the full story in the Times Union.
