Stewart airport sets cargo tonnage record
MidHudson News is reporting while the coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on passenger air travel at New York Stewart International Airport, cargo volume at the Newburgh area air hub has reached new heights. During the first 10 months of 2020, the most current information available from the Port Authority, cargo tonnage has skyrocketed, said Michael Torelli, the airport business director, during a briefing with the Stewart Airport Commission January 26. “Through October we have already broken any record that we had at Stewart for tonnage with still two months to go. Preliminary numbers through November are showing that trend continuing and on-ground inspections through December are showing that it is going to be multiplying,” he said. Between cargo and mail shipped, a total of nearly 48,000 tons have flowed through Stewart, the most ever during a 10-month period. Passenger traffic, however, has decreased 86.7 percent.
