Renewed sub contract means work in Pittsfield, MA

Tony Dobrowolski is reporting for The Berkshire Eagle General Dynamics Mission Systems has entered into a new four-year, $104.2 million submarine contract with the U.S. Navy. Most of the work will be done in Pittsfield, Mass., company officials said June 24. The company is expanding to accommodate the work, which includes development, production and installation of fire-control systems for the Columbia/Dreadnought class of ballistic missile submarines. The expansion is expected to be completed by November 2024. Most of the new work will be done by the company's current 1,633-member workforce, said Laura Hooks, vice president of General Dynamics Mission Systems Strategic Systems. The company plans to add manufacturing employees under the new contract; General Dynamics hired 55 manufacturing employees last year and is expected to add another 15 this year.
