Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is calling on the Trump administration to modify IRS guidelines that could be impeding access to relief payments for millions of low-income people in the country. People who receive federal benefits and do not need to file taxes to receive relief under the CARES Act have until noon Wed., Apr. 22, to register child dependents who are eligible for additional $500 payments. Gillibrand said the short-notice requirement could affect veterans and Social Security recipients and needs to be altered to give people more time. “During this time of crisis, the government should be doing everything possible to make it easier for people to receive direct relief, but this short-sighted decision makes it harder. I am urging the Trump administration to modify these misguided guidelines — failure to do so would be irresponsible and negligent,” she said. Anyone unable to apply in time for the deadline will have to wait until next year for the additional relief payments. Read the full story at nystateofpolitics [dot] com.
