Cuomo wants to ensure abortion rights with constitutional amendment

Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Mon., Jan. 30, he will seek a constitutional amendment to codify into state law the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. The amendment would ensure the right to an abortion remain in place in New York in the event the decision is overturned, or altered by a new U.S. Supreme Court. State constitutional amendments must be passed by two consecutively elected Legislatures. If lawmakers were to pass an amendment this year, lawmakers in 2019 would have to pass it again, Hamilton writes.
