Cuomo wants to ensure abortion rights with constitutional amendment

Jan 31, 2017 6:30 am

Matthew Hamilton is reporting at Capitol Confidential Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Mon., Jan. 30, he will seek a constitutional amendment to codify into state law the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. The amendment would ensure the right to an abortion remain in place in New York in the event the decision is overturned, or altered by a new U.S. Supreme Court. State constitutional amendments must be passed by two consecutively elected Legislatures. If lawmakers were to pass an amendment this year, lawmakers in 2019 would have to pass it again, Hamilton writes. Amendments that receive legislative approval then go to the voters in November after they are passed the second time. Read the full story at Capitol Confidential, a Times Union blog.
