Sarah Trafton reports for Columbia-Greene Media that three corrections officers were injured in a Dec. 20 assault at the Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie. One officer was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment of sustained neck and facial trauma, the other two remained on duty. NYSCOPBA Mid-Hudson Region Vice President Michael Mazzella said that 2019 is the fourth straight year that assaults on corrections officers have increased. “In 2016 there were 760 reported assaults on staff. With a week left in 2019, we are approaching 1,000 assaults on staff as inmate advocates continue to push for decreased disciplinary measures,” Mazzella said. Thomas Mailey from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision would not say much about the assault in Coxsackie. "The Department is reviewing an incident involving several correction officers and an incarcerated individual that occurred on Dec. 20 at Greene Correctional Facility and cannot comment at this time,” Mailey said in a statement.
