DEC reopens state boat launches after public outcry

Apr 21, 2020 5:45 am
David Figura is reporting for NewYorkUpdate [dot] com the state Department of Environmental Conservation has confirmed that state-owned boat launches have been reopened. This weekend the state also announced that golf courses and marinas would be reopened, with limitations to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “New York State recognizes the importance of recreation and continues to encourage the public to get outside locally and responsibly to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” the DEC said. On April 16, the department issued a statement that the use of its boat launches would be temporarily suspended. The public reaction to the announcement was immediate and in many cases negative. Many thought it was unnecessary and more applicable to downstate launches where the state’s population and numbers of COVID-19 cases are higher. An online petition at change [dot] org requesting they be reopened was started by Sean Silvernail, of Schenectady, and gathered more than 21,000 signatures. The DEC April 19, sent a written statement to NYup [dot] com confirming the relaxing of rules also applied to the state-owned boat launches. Read the full story at NewYorkUpstate [dot] com.
