Greene lawmakers urge the state to impose internet sales tax
Daniel Zuckerman is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Greene County Legislature's Finance Committee unanimously approved a resolution March 19, urging the state to impose an internet fairness conformity tax for inclusion in the 2018-19 state Executive Budget. Millions and millions of dollars are made through internet sales, Greene County Treasurer Peter Markou said, adding the state is not collecting a dime of that money. Sales tax collection in Greene County represents 30 percent of its annual budget. An estimated $80 million in internet sales tax could be collected by the state in 2019 if the resolution passes, and would be allocated by online activity in each county, Markou said.
