Work underway to stabilize Greenport landslide
Amanda Purcell is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media work to stabilize an embankment off Bridge Street in Greenport got underway Fri., Nov. 17. States of emergency were declared in Greenport, Stockport and Stottville for a period of five days after a portion of the hillside slid into Claverack Creek. A private contractor was hired to do the work after a response plan was created by Columbia County Emergency Management and other agencies. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office said there were no hazards for residents downstream, but the public was advised to avoid the area. The landslide occurred to the left, behind the Sons and Daughters of Italy, located at 27 Bridge Street. A similar, but more extensive event occurred in nearly the same location in 2006.
