Matthew Hamilton is reporting in the Times Union Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Mon., Aug. 14, signed legislation that adds community centers to the list of public places where the commission of certain crimes can result in stiffer penalties. The legislation was introduced as a response to bomb threats against Jewish community centers, including some in New York, in recent months. Cuomo said violent clashes in Charlottesville, Va., over the weekend at a white supremacist rally “demonstrate that now, more than ever, we must stand united against bias and hate in all of its forms and this new law is one more step toward a more just and more equal New York for all.” The bill was originally sent to Cuomo last week. It passed the Legislature in June. Read the full story in the Times Union.
