State unemployment rate falls to 2009 level

The New York State Department of Labor is reporting between April and May 2013, New York State's unemployment rate fell from 7.8 percent to 7.6 percent, its lowest level since February 2009, according to preliminary figures released Thurs., June 20. In addition, the state economy added 5,000 private sector jobs in May 2013, for a growth rate of .1 percent. Sectors reporting the greatest job gains included professional and business services, leisure and hospitality and educational and health services. The largest number of job losses were reported in the government sector. Those losses were concentrated at the local level.
