With rain, lots of sewage overflows

May 08, 2019 12:43 am
It has rained nearly every day locally for more than a week, and that means lots of combined sewer overflows from local sewage plants into the Hudson River and other local waterways. The DEC says combined sewer overflows, "may contain mixtures of domestic sewage, stormwater runoff, and sometimes, industrial wastewater, including high levels of suspended solids, toxic chemicals, floatable material and other pollutants." In Kingston May 7, there was a 24-hour overflow with 500 gallons per minute estimated going into Rondout Creek. In Troy May 5, an estimated 1,000 gallons-per-minute flowed into the Hudson River for at least six hours. The same day in Albany, NYAlert reports an unknown amount of untreated sewage flowed into the Hudson River, for an undisclosed time period. In Poughkeepsie the same day, 200 gallons-per-minute entered the Hudson River for six hours. In Newburgh May 5, 500 gallons-per-minute of "combined sanitary and stormwater" were released into the Hudson River over 24 hours. May 4 in Kingston another 500 gallons-per-minute went into Rondout Creek. In Hudson May 4, 5,000 gallons entered the Hudson River. On May 3 in Troy, another 1,000 gallons-per-minute entered the Hudson River for nine hours. Another 5,000 gallons, "partially treated with disinfection," entered the river in Hudson on May 3.
